Slow cooker turkey chili.
This slow cooker turkey chili is not only extremely healthy as it contains no added salt, sugar or fat but it is very filling as it contains plenty of lean protein and vegetables.
Remember that if you are trying to lose weight and keep it off forever it is very important to focus on eating whole-foods as often as possible. Since whole-foods contain less Calories and are more filling than processed foods, if you focus on eating more whole-foods throughout the day you will likely consume less overall Calories (studies have shown this and my clients have also noticed it). In addition, whole-foods have more fiber and other nutrients which are simply more benefical for your health.
As with all of the meals I cook, this one contains plenty of protein and vegetables. Below I explain in greater detail why consuming enough protein and vegetables is important as well as why it is important to focus on eating lean protein sources as often as possible.
Ensuring that you consume enough protein with each meal is important for two reasons:
Protein is more satiating than carbs and fats which means you will be less likely to snack later
In order to gain and maintain muscle, the consumption of adequate protein (along with resistance training) is key
Consuming lean (low in saturated fat) protein as often as possible is important for two reasons:
Less saturated fat means less Calories
High amounts of saturated fat are not good for cardiovascular health despite what the Keto and Carnivore-lovers will tell you (the American Heart Association for example recommends that no more than 10% of your fat intake be from saturated fat)
Consuming plenty of vegetables is important for general health as we get fiber, vitamins, minerals and disease fighting plant chemicals. In addition, from a weight-loss or weight-maintenance perspective, vegetables help to fill us up while adding very few Calories to our diet compared to processed foods.
Enough with the education, below is a photo of the finished turkey chili recipe that I made along with the ingredients and directions.
Ingredients:
2 packs of ground turkey (see photo below for size)
1 diced onion
3 cloves of garlic
2 tablespoons of madras curry powder
2 sweet potatoes (approximately 12 cups cubed into 1 inch cubes)
1 can of black beans (rinse before using)
1 can of diced tomatoes
2 cups of frozen corn
3 cups of water
Directions:
Step 1: Cook the ground turkey and then drain out all of the excess fat and water (while the turkey is cooking dice the onion, garlic cloves and sweet potatoes).
Step 2: Add the diced onion and garlic to the pan that the turkey is in and cook until the onions are soft and everything smells nice.
Step 3: Add the 2 tablespoons of madras curry powder to the turkey, onions and garlic and thoroughly mix it all together.
Step 4: Plug in your slow cooker and turn it on low or high depending on how quickly you want your meal finished.
Step 5: Add everything to the slow cooker and you are done!
